Actera’s TeraSerum™ Yerba Mate ILOX+ was named the winner in the 2020 Sustainable Beauty Awards category for Sustainable Ingredient.
The award is given to a cosmetic ingredient that makes a sustainable difference in terms of environmental and/or social impact. The ingredient could have a lower environmental impact by cultivation/harvesting method, synthesis or application. Such materials can be novel ingredients, produced from renewable feedstock, or from a new extraction/processing method.
The natural antioxidant ingredient is made from yerba mate leaves which are ethically sourced from the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil. The company works with the Araucária+ initiative to ensure sustainable forest management.
Dr. Mark Smith, director general of NATRUE, an international non-profit association committed to promoting and protecting natural and organic cosmetics worldwide, spoke to the reasons behind Actera’s win:
“Not only is it a natural ingredient in terms of its origin and its production, but also because of the various sustainability focus qualities of the raw material, particularly when it comes to the aspect of ensuring environmental sustainability vis-à-vis things like deforestation, but primarily to do with the social aspect of giving back to the community and the various certifications that have also been achieved to substantiate this.”
“We hope these awards inspire more companies to take the green road,” says Amarjit Sahota, Founder of Ecovia Intelligence and organizer of the Sustainable Beauty Awards since 2013, in his remarks.
Ecovia Intelligence, the organizer of the event, specializes in research, consulting, and training for several industries including organic and natural foods, food ingredients, natural beauty and personal care products, cosmetic ingredients, green chemicals, sustainable consumer goods, and more.
